Darwin's PrimatesThis body of work was a major piece of my BA(Hons) course. With it I looked at the idea of scientific record and artistic recording of flora and fauna back during the time of Charles Darwin and his Voyage of Discovery.
I decided to look at how images may have looked had the scientists and natural historians had access to modern day DSLRs on their voyages. What value would these images hold for us today? Would they have scientific value or artistic value, or both? What would they look like after all of this time. I photographed primates, looking for similar portrait images for all. I then tried to age these primate portraits, I imagined them discovered by one lucky individual trawling through an attic untouched for decades. The originals are printed on roll canvas, and for my exhibition were pinned to the wall as if museum pieces. |
